The future of the historic city archive of Cologne had been uncertain for decades. First it was due to a lack of space, and then the entire building underwent a disastrous collapse in 2009. The architectural office of Waechter+Waechter Architekten came to the rescue, and a new building has been built in Berlin. Since its opening, the rescued archives, the staff and the users have been staging a comeback - and a successful one at that. The architects managed to reconcile two opposites: the transparency and openness of the civic archive was now in harmony with an indestructible security wing for the archive records.
The offices of the employees as well as the elevators are covered with grey linoleum flooring, chosen by Waechter+Waechter. They valued it as a sustainable and ecological product that meets high hygienic aesthetic requirements and is hardwearing at the same time. Marmoleum Walton was used on the stair treads, and the custom-made Douglas fir tables were given an inlay of Furniture Linoleum to match -both in a pastel moss green.
